Guantanamo.- “Love for Cuba, love for the Cubans” is the exact expression to talk about an exhibition that brought together the passion for art and the desires to share by a group of filmmakers and artists headed by Roberto Chile. His name is unique: “Alas con puntas”.
With this definition, the famed maestro of the Cuban documentary opened on Thursday the doors of the Anton Morales Gallery in the city of Guantánamo to offer a project that brought together the efforts of 20 filmmakers and 20 artists of ceramics, painting and photography. They had few resources but were motivated by a desire to give a different and captivating collective work. We could not miss the opportunity to interview Roberto Chile, the central figure of this idea that began as a dream and today is a beautiful reality.
Journalist (Q): What is “Alas con puntas”?
Roberto Chile (RCH): This project is a dialogue between the audiovisual and visual arts. In this case is to match in the same space and time a sample of 20 paintings, sculptures, photography with 20 audiovisual, each of which is dedicated to the exhibitors. In most cases, shorts penetrate the artist’s creative process in these works, or similar to those included in the exhibition.
Q: What is the purpose of “Alas con puntas”?
RCH: “Alas con puntas” aims to contribute to national culture, because culture in Cuba is everyone. It is an eminently Cuban and humane project because it invites to grow and inspired artists to create their works, for which they were composed.
Q: Roberto Chile is a chronicler of his time for his reportorial life and documentary maker, but it also highlights the intimate link with the commander Fidel´s political and social work. What has the fruitful career and his relationship with the top leader of the Cuban Revolution meant for Roberto Chile?
RCH: Being with Fidel in a journalistic trench for over 20 years is the greatest thing that ever happened to me in my professional life. Walking with him and Cuba in good and bad moments and sharing with important people around the world have been unforgettable experiences in my career. Working together with him has been a continuous and daily lesson and I admit Fidel never ceases to amaze me.
Q: What important moments of your life could not be forgotten?
RCH: “During my career there are many unforgettable moments, of those I remember when I worked in Pakistan to reflect the work of our physicians there through documentaries. I also have my pleasant experiences in Venezuela, in addition to my cultural work with José Fuster, Frank Fernandez, Silvio Rodriguez, I just did not limited or put barriers or my intentions.
Q: For the musicalization and spirituality in your work, one can identify Roberto Chile behind each story or documentary before knowing the author´s name and that´s one of the singularities of your work. What new projects do you have in your dream of making in favor of Cuban culture?
RCH: Right now I have almost completed a project called “Sencillamente Korda”, a documentary with sound track composed by jazz player Alexis Bosh, which is a tribute to Korda and its premier will take place in the 50th anniversary of his famous picture of Che. I will also participate in the “Cuba pinta Guayasamín” exhibition on November 29 and will be at the Oswaldo Guasayamín foundation until next January.
Roberto Chile, the master of documentary and reportage, always in love with the art and Cuba, is inspired by new dreams to continue his work that leaves a mark for history. Thank you very much to this famous filmmaker and partners for giving us “Alas con puntas” for culture.
